Comprehensive Fit Testing In Clinic Or At Your Workplace
Mask and Ear Fit testing is an essential preventative service for workers using tight-fitting respirators (disposable or reusable) and/or those working in noisy environments requiring hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is only effective if they are properly fitted and sealed, therefore appropriate testing is essential for protecting workers from hazardous airborne substances such as dust, silica, fumes, and vapours or to offer adequate noise reduction.
Respirator fit testing and training is mandatory for workers using tight-fitting respirators. Employers must ensure testing is completed prior to initial use of each respirator, with re-testing recommended annually and wherever there is a change to facial structure, or significant body weight change.
Ear fit testing is recommended prior to PPE use, annually, and whenever there is a change of ear plug type, or any condition that may affect fit.
At RediMed, we provide professional quantitative fit testing services to protect your workers that can be included in your pre-employment medical assessments or as part of your ongoing health monitoring program.
Why Is Fit Testing Important?
Ensuring your workers have a correctly fitted respirator and any other PPE is critical in preventing exposure to airborne contaminants or excessive noise. Improperly fitted or worn PPE can compromise workers safety and expose employers to compliance risks. Employers have legal obligations to ensure PPE is suitable, correctly fitted, and provides reasonable comfort where its use is required. We also understand the conditions workers face across a number of industries including mining, construction, manufacturing and healthcare, and fit testing is just one step to ensuring workplace safety.

Fit Testing FAQs
- RediMed offers both Respirator (Mask) and Hearing Protection (Ear) fit testing to ensure workers are properly protected in their environments.
- Respirator (Mask): RediMed provides quantitative testing, using specialised equipment to measure the amount of particles that leak into a mask compared to those present in the surrounding environment. This process generates a “fit factor”, which indicates how well the mask seals to the wearer’s face. Quantitative testing is suitable for all tight-fitting respirators (disposable/filtering facepieces, half and full face re-usable).
- Hearing Protection Device (Ear): RediMed utilise the 3M E-A-Rfit Dual-Ear Validation System to deliver real-time, quantitative measurement of a worker’s hearing protection effectiveness. A Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) is generated, which reflects the level of noise reduction achieved based on how the hearing protection is fitted.
- Mask Fit: Fit testing is required prior to use of each tight-fitting respirator. Re-testing is recommended annually and whenever there is a change in respirator type, facial structure, or significant weight change of the user.
- Ear Fit: Ear fit testing is recommended to be conducted prior to PPE use, annually and whenever there is a change is earplug type, or any condition that could affect earplug fit.
Yes, we have the ability to come to your workplace to complete the required testing.
- Mask Fit: Workers must be clean shaven whenever undergoing a fit test or while wearing a tight-fitting respirator. AS/NZS1715 does not permit testing where facial hair or stubble may affect the seal of the mask to the face. Workers should also avoid eating, smoking, or vaping for at least 30 minutes prior to testing
- Ear Fit: If a worker suspects ear canal blockage (e.g. wax) in the ear canal, it is recommended they seek assessment from their GP prior to testing
RediMed carry a range of adaptors including 3M and Sundstrom in order to test your own mask. If you are unable to bring your own, please refer to our fit testing onboarding form for a list of masks that we have in stock for testing to ensure your specific mask will be available. Where a mask or hearing protection device is not in RediMed's standard stock, we will review the request and attempt to provide an alternative solution where possible.
- Late cancellations and non attendances are charged inline with RediMed's Health Screening policy.
- If a worker presents with facial hair that compromises the sealing surface or valves of the respirator and is unable or unwilling to remove it, the fit test cannot proceed. The appointment will be cancelled and fees will apply.
